The Stringybark Short Story Award 2011 Contest

$300 cash for first place, $125 for second place and $50 for third place plus a certificate and publication in hardcopy and/or electronically and a copy of the book; authors of highly commended stories are also invited to have their stories published.

  • 1400 words maximum.
  • $9.50/one story; $17/two stories; $22.50 for a maximum of three stories.
  • Entry fee must be paid via PayPal (See required payment page).
  • Include name and contact info on cover sheet only.
  • Entries must be submitted via e-mail. (See required cover sheet).
  • Genre:  For any story, written by anyone, of any genre that has some reference to Australia.

Sentinel Literary Quarterly Short Story Competition

  • £150 first place, £75, second place,  £ 50 third place, £10 for 3 highly commended stories,  plus publication in Sentinel Champions magazine.
  • 1500 word maximum.
  • £4/1, £8/2, £10/3, £12/4 (Enter as many stories as you wish).
  • Entry fee must be paid via PayPal if submitted via e-mail.
  • Postal money order if submitting via postal services.
  • Must submit a typed cover note in a prescribed format (see required cover letter format).
  • Previously published stories, including those that have appeared on web sites or blogs will not be considered. Neither may stories that are under consideration elsewhere nor those that have been selected for publication eligible.

Meridian Writing Winter Story Competition

  • £100 first place; £50 second place & £25 third place, plus firstwriter.com vouchers
  • 3,000 word maximum.
  • Entry fee £5 per story. Any theme/genre. There is no limit on the number of entries any one person may enter but no author may win more than one prize in any competition. Multiple entries may be made on one entry form with all stories listed.
  • The competition is open to both published and unpublished authors, 16 years or older,   writing in any genre, including children’s fiction.  Stories must not have been previously published elsewhere either in print or online.
  • Entries accepted online or via post.
  • Each entry must be accompanied by an entry form (which can be copied from our website; no information on story itself, including the cover letter attached to any story or the story will be disqualified from the judging.
  • Winning authors will be required to supply a short (50 – 100 word) bio which will be published alongside their story.
  • Deadline: December 31, 2011.

2011 Canadian Tales of the Mysterious Short Story Competition

  • Must contain an element of mystery, must be identifiably Canadian (written by a Canadian, or written about Canadian, or takes place in Canada).
  • $500 first place; $150 second place, $100 third place, 10 honorable mentions of $25. All winning entries will be published by Red Tuque Books in the upcoming anthology, ‘Canadian Tales Of The Mysterious’.
  • 1,500-5,000 word manuscripts only will be read; the word count is strict.
  • Entry fees: $ 15 for one; $25 for two; $30 for max of three to be read.
  • The judging is blind, so it is possible for one author to have up to three winners.
  • All manuscripts must be original, unpublished fiction, and stories that have been published online are considered previously published.
  • Author retains all rights, but first-print rights are granted to Red Tuque Books for the anthology.
  • Payment is in Canadian funds.
  • Authors name must no appear on the manuscript. Each entry must be accompanied by a separate cover sheet with the author’s name, complete mailing address, email address, phone number, the title of the piece, and  the word count.
  • Entry fees must be submitted by mail with their accompanying manuscripts. Payment is in Canadian funds. Personal cheques, bank drafts, and money orders, should be drawn on a Canadian Bank. Please make  payable to Red Tuque Books Inc.

Colonade Writing Contest

  • $100 quarterly winners; $500 for story of the year; publication in anthology, plus two complimentary copies of anthology.
  • 10,000 words maximum, previously unpublished work.
  • $12 entry fee, make checks and money orders payable to CJM Books, or use PayPal button on the website for all major plastic cards.
  • Include Name, mailing address, phone number, and email address on a separate cover page, to prevent bias during judging.
  • Publish fiction only.
  • Authors may submit more than one story, however each author is only allowed one story as a winner per year.
  • Authors must be 18 years of age or older; stories must be written primarily in English..

Dream Quest One Poetry and writing Contest

  • $250 first place; $125 second place, $50 third place for poetry.
  • $500 first place; $250 second place, $100 third place for other writings, i.e., fiction, non-fiction, essays, diary, journal entries and short screenplays are accepted.
  • All poems must be 30 lines or fewer, may be either neatly handwritten or typed, single or double line spacing, on any subject or theme.  All entries must be original works.
  • All short stories may be on any subject or theme.  For example, any fiction, non-fiction, essays, diary, journal entries and short screenplays are accepted.    Contestants will enter their short stories either neatly hand printed or typed, single or double line spacing, within a maximum of (5) pages or less.  All    entries must be original works.
  • Entry fees: $5 per poem; $10 per writing story, essays, etc.
  • Previously published poems and short stories in other contests, books,         magazines, etc are accepted and welcomed as long as they are original works created by the contest entrant(s).
  • You may submit entries to both the poetry contest and the writing contest, at         the same time. Multiple entries are accepted.
  • Deadline: Postmark of December 31, 2011.

The Gemini Magazine Poetry Open

  • $1,000 first place, $100 second place, $50 third place; honorable mentions (3), all six finalists will be published in the March 2012 issue of Gemini;
  • Entry fee: $5 (up to three poems).
  • Prose poem, free verse, ballad, ballade, rhyme, haiku, haibun, sonnet, lyric, elegy, limerick, narrative, pastoral, acrostic, cinquain, quatrain, allegory. Doesn’t matter what it’s called, as long as it moves us.
  • No restrictions on content, style or length. Simply send your best unpublished poems by email or snail mail.
  • Deadline: January 3, 2012.
