Walrus Publishing’s mission is to work with talented St. Louis writers to develop their manuscripts for publication for distribution to a local and national audience. As part of this mission, we are launching a year-long writing contest focused on you, the St. Louis writer.
We are looking for short stories about Saint Louis from Saint Louis writers; a story set here, a story about here, a history of here–anything you can think of as long as Saint Louis is part of the story. The story can be of any genre – romance, horror, suspense, mystery, thriller, GLBTQA, humor, whatever (with the exception of erotic or pornographic). This is your city. This is our city. The annual CinemaSpoke screenplay competition will begin accepting entries immediately, with a deadline of March 31, 2012. The contest, designed to showcase local writers, is sponsored by Script Mechanics, in cooperation with Cinema St. Louis. Screenwriters on both sides of the Mississippi River, within a 150-mile radius of St. Louis, Mo., are eligible to enter their feature-length screenplays (90-120 pages).
Entry fee is $30, and judges shall select from three to five finalists based on the strength of submissions. Judges will be filmmakers, critics, and instructors. Prizes for the winner will include coverage by an Emmy Award-winning Hollywood screenwriting author and writing instructor and notification to approximately 400 producers by a union-signatory Hollywood agent. The Doris Bakwin Award for Writing by a Woman will take entries until March 15, 2012. (postmark deadline). Final Judge is Moira Crone. Reading fee: $20; they accept checks or money orders. Submit the first 50-60 pages of a fiction manuscript (Stories or a novel) or non-fiction (Memoir, not academic work) by a single author identifying as a woman. Use two title pages one with title and author name and address, e-mail, etc. and one with just the manuscript title. The entire manuscript may not have been previously published, self-published, in print or online, although individual parts of the manuscript (e.g. stories or chapters) may have been printed in journals or published online.
