Reading the Quran in Starbucks: A Feminist Secularist Journalist and a Traditional Muslim Scholar Search for Common Ground.

Twenty years into their friendship, the American journalist Carla Power and her longtime friend Sheikh Mohammad Akram Nadwi embarked on discussions of the Quran together. Their conversations, which ranged from veiling to the Prophet Yusuf, from jihad to migration to child-rearing, opened fresh seams of cultural dialogue. Exploring where their worldviews diverged and converged over the course of a year, the two had a rare vantage on the clash of civilizations myth.

Carla Power writes for TIME and was a foreign correspondent for Newsweek. Her writing has appeared in Vogue, Glamour, The New York Times Magazine, and Foreign Policy. Her work has been recognized with an Overseas Press Club award, a Women in Media Award, and the National Women’s Political Caucus’s EMMA Award. She holds a graduate degree in Middle Eastern Studies from Oxford, as well as degrees from Yale and Columbia.
